Tottenham appeal for Harry Kane to be awarded Eriksen’s Goal Against Stoke

Tottenham Hotspur has taken the unprecedented step of appealing a ‘dubious goal panel’ ruling and will write to the Premier League in a bid to have Harry Kane awarded their winner at Stoke and help his golden boot challenge.

The 62nd-minute goal that virtually assured Spurs of Champions League football next season came via an in-swinging Christian Eriksen free-kick at the Bet365 Stadium.

It was unclear whether went indirectly or took a touch of Kane, with Premier League Goals Accreditation Panel gave the goal to Eriksen.

Should Kane be awarded the goal, it would take his season tally to 25 league goals, four behind Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.

Speaking after the game, however, Kane was adamant the ball had brushed off his shoulder.

“I swear on my daughter’s life that I touched the ball, but there’s nothing I can do,” added Kane.

“If they turn it around, they turn it around. If they take my word, they take my word.

“It is what it is – the most important thing is that we won the game.”

Spurs’ appeal will prompt the goal to be reviewed again, this time by different panel members.

The episode spawned several spoofs on social media, with some fans of rival clubs mocking an apparently unhealthy obsession with the individual award.

Kane is aiming to be the first player to win the golden boot in three consecutive Premier League seasons since Arsenal’s Thierry Henry.

The England striker remains confident he can win the prize despite the deficit to in-form Salah, who is back on full training after a groin injury scare.

“I still believe I can. There are still games to go,” said Kane.

“I’ve got to focus on my game. I can’t control what he does.

“Obviously as a striker, it would be great to win the golden boot again and I will keep working hard from now until the end of the season.”

Tottenham play champions elect Manchester City at Wembley next Saturday before a playing Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-finals at the same stadium seven days later.
